I didn't forget about this; I just was burnt out on Suikoden for-fucking-ever and neither wanted to do alt text nor continue my replay to fix the music cues. As is probably not a surprise to anyone who knows me, the tipping point for me to re-put together this update was realising that I could get this to be less of a kludgy mass of stuff postable on dreamwidth and stuff for replacement via python script, and have it be actually readable in text form as Markdown. This means it'd take longer to fix up each update than it did already, but it'll be less despair-inducing.

If you'd like a zip of the whole LP shebang as a script reference or something, drop a comment; I'm still not likely to have an actual update schedule. It's fairly legible; it's just really not ideal.

Also, for once, this update actually has alt text everywhere it should. ... I think. I might have missed something. But still.

LAST TIME: Jowy's return! Politicking! Highland's invading! Further politicking!

Gooooooooood morning, everyone! Apologies for the delay; I wanted to get started with IV and also I spent a decent amount of time fixing up images for these. ... I'm still not done with that, but. I'm also doing a few format changes to match how I'm doing IV! Probably going to go back through suikoI and get those to match, too, since not changing anything major.

This is the opening movie! Please watch it. Apparently they got the Warsaw Philharmonic to do the music? I really like Higashino Miki's compositions but I'm kind of ambivalent on this one, haha.

OUR CAST )

NAME ENTRY But first, what do we name the protag? It'll be commented on at least once if Tir and Riou have the same name, so that's a thought.

I got a bunch of suggestions in-thread, and they weren't bad, but I was talking to Espeon and he suggested Odessa and I am giggling forever. It is beautiful.

LAST TIME: ROCKS FALL, FLIKTOR DIE. OR DID THEY???
PART 01 OF ... 49? MAYBE? )

STATS:

- PEOPLE WITH FACES MET: Odessa, Jowy Atreides (THE SPICE MUST FLOW), Rowd, Luca Blight
- Jowy Points: On one hand, he told Odessa to jump off a cliff 108 * 4 times and still didn't take no for an answer. On the other, at least they held hands while jumping off the cliff. So I guess he's at a -2 for now. (-4 for jumping off a cliff, -2 for railroading, +2 for trying to prevent their imminent Death By Luca, +2 for hand holding.)
- Game Overs: 0 total
- Bathrooms: 0

NEXT TIME: Jumping off cliffs is a really bad idea, nerds. Don't do it.

surskitty: Flonne holding a katana (true practice of stealth)
Oh my god. You know how I've been keeping track of how many bathrooms I find? I found out where they keep the toilet paper. (That's a page from the Suikoden III manga, if you're wondering. If you're wondering about context, wellllll I can't really help you there.)

Thanks a bunch, Legendaryseeker, for helping me with describing images! :D

Do I get a cookie :D

You are very punny.
Varkas is such a nice blend of "Karkat" and "Vantas."
HMMM MR. HUSS13, H4V3 YOU H34RD 4 G4M3 C4LL3D SU1KOD3N?
You get a ... you get a not quite a cookie, that's what you get. Cheesecake? Yeah, sure, cheesecake.

Hey, Varkas is even the red one. It totally works. I guess.

I made a rec thread a while ago and included handy-dandy links to things like roms and emulators. Except I totally didn't. Because that would be Wrong. But seriously, I'm playing this on my $300 netbook running Ubuntu without any problems. You can get through the first game in about 12 hours if you know exactly what you're doing and don't waste time; most playthroughs end up around 20 hours. The second game's doable in a bit under 20 hours; I finished at around 45 both times I played, but a lot of that was spent idling trying to get the entirely-optional squirrels to join. And on my second file I wasted about three hours beating up 108 groups of soldiers at the beginning of the game because I heard rumours that if you beat up 108 groups of soldiers before jumping off the cliff, the opening sequence would be in colour rather than sepia tones. Said rumours are right, btw.

The rest of the series is quite a bit harder to emulate, being PS2 (ignoring the gaidens which are japan-only) games, and suikoIII was never released in Europe, but they're good too. III has good writing and interesting but not necessarily good gameplay (the manga adaptation is good, though, and actually findable unlike the other manga adaptations) and IV has terrible writing and good gameplay. V is really fucking long, but it's pretty good. Just needs more palette swaps: it keeps reusing the same monsters all over the place. :( IV also has the problem of not enough palette swaps; III uses palette swaps whenever an area goes up in level, which I am totally fine with except that item drops change every chapter. I and II don't usually reuse monster designs. It's kind of neat, really.

But anyway, FUCK YES, BEGINNING OF ACTUAL PLOT.

THE STORY SO FAR: A bunch of people have been introduced, and our manipulative b(est|oy) friend is off with the Scumbags with Faces. WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG

H-land and Espeon helped me with the rock puns. :3

OKAY. THIS UPDATE IS THE LAST MOSTLY-IRRELEVANT ONE \o/

I'm not sure why I'm faintly disappointed about no comments when pretty much no one reads my dw, or, for that matter, knows I post on a dw. I am, though! It is very sad and faintly silly.

THE STORY SO FAR: A bunch of people with faces got introduced, and nothing anyone cares about happened. :'( Also I feel faintly apologetic about capslock character names in alt text, but it'd probably be a pain in the ass to make it ... not do that .... Doesn't really work with how I auto-insert the portrait sprites.

NEXT TIME: ANTS. ANTS EVERYWHERE. THOUSANDS OF THEM.
surskitty: Cynthia and Giratina in the Origin World (hugs! thousands of them!)
Goooooood morning, everyone! A while ago, I was super bored and considering replaying Suikoden I and II, right, so I decided to do a Let's Play! And so I did. Well, as of right now I'm about an eighth of the way through Suikoden II, but I've finished the lp of SuikoI. Said original thread is here but here I am, reposting a slightly cleaned up version. I'm trying to slowly repost everything from there over here, but it's a bit tricky since this is tedious and I need to add alt text and now also reupload everything since Imageshack is apparently an even stupider butt than I thought.

A STARTING POINT: HERE is a place you can download the first game's soundtrack. That site also has a few Suikoden soundtracks that I didn't know existed the day before I started this LP, because GenSui is a fandom where you can find ALL SORTS OF OBSCURE THINGS as long as you're not looking for, idk, a game in the main universe that came out more recently than 2006??? Tierkreis does not count; sorry, Tierkreis fans, I have been enjoying my adventures with Tierkreis whenever I don't get distracted with things like replaying Suikoden I for the tenth time or by trying to get to Viki's sequence in Suikogaiden 2, what is UP with that. But really. Tierkreis! It doesn't count. Neither does 紡がれし百年の時, which wasn't even announced when I first started this lp. I still am half-expecting it to not exist, and it's come out in Japan by the time I'm editing this. (Actually I've heard it feels like a Suikoden game but they left out a lot of the things I really like about this series.)

Every once in a while, I do link to youtube for bgm, but mostly I just say what plays and expect you to figure it out. And if you don't care, well, no skin off my back. 8D But it's worth noting that I can't actually play music while working on this lp, so while I'm right like 95% of the time for SuikoI and at least 50% of the time for SuikoII (this isn't because I don't know the SuikoII soundtrack; this is because there are a billion and a half remixes of the same tune and while I understand why they did that, it is hell for recognising things by ear), every once in a while I might be wrong. But I'm pretty awesome about it, no lies.

BUT ANYWAY, HERE IS A POINT

Intentionally poorly-drawn artwork of various major characters looking constipated BOX ART this is actually ripped from the game; it's in the ram while looking at old books.

Watercolour rendition of the same major characters, except now they look sort of cool and not at all as though they need more fiber in their diet And this is what the Japanese box art looks like; it's what you get if you give Ivanov all of the paint cans, which I don't think I actually ended up doing in this file. If you're wondering, this is the English art. I would try to describe it for those of you using screenreaders, but to be quite honest, I have no idea what the fuck is going on there. Who are these people!? WHAT IS GOING ON?! If you figure it out, please tell me.

And here is a video of the opening for the Sega Saturn remake. Said remake is Japan-only, and has many pointless changes (some of which I quite like the idea of), but I love the modified opening. It fits in with Suikoden II's opening much better than the PSX SuikoI opening does. You can look that one up if you want; the music's the same but the visual's less interesting. Similar! But all sprites instead of art.

From memory, the text is: PLEASE TELL ME THE ANSWER / IS FATE UNCHANGEABLE

EVEN AT HIS MOST POWERLESS / MAN'S EXISTENCE IS NEVER WITHOUT MEANING

... ... ... Oh, hey, I paid attention to the opening this time and I'd gotten it right from memory despite seeing it in English like twice in the past year. Sob.

PART ONE OF ... 27, PROBABLY; MODERATELY IMAGE-HEAVY )

STATS:

- People with faces met: ☆☆☆☆☆☆, Teo McDohl, Barbarosa, Windy, Kasim Hazil, Kraze, Gremio, Ted, Cleo, Pahn, Sonya Shulen, Milich Oppenheimer, Marie = 13, 13 total
- Notable expeditions that have nothing to do with plot: 1, 1 total
- Typos I spotted: 2, 2 total
- Game Overs: 1, 1 total
- BOCCHAAA~~~N: Gremio: 4, Pahn: 2, Cleo: 2, total: 8
- Bathrooms: 0, but I think someone might be breaking Windy around here.

OKAY! QUICK NOTE: there are things I can examine all over the place. I got most of the ones I remember as being interesting, but if you see some junk I'm leaving alone and you want to know what the hell it is, go ahead and say so! Mind you, I don't, idk, screencap the entire map, so there's probably not that much to comment on, but you never know.

NEXT TIME: Ted tries to come out of the closet! Punks! Elephant dragons! More punks! Infinite staircases! Mysterious old women who teleport into people's rooms in the middle of the night while they're sleeping! Punks!
