And now, we're back in Lenankamp! What fun. Back to the inn and back to the sewers to talk to Odessa and friends...

: "Welcome back! I'm so glad you made it." I don't trust you.

: "☆☆☆☆☆☆! You're back! Thank god! Our problems are solved." What, you want someone whacked off? Because I'm pretty sure that's all my superpowers are good for.

: [bounces] "Odessa! You're not planning to..."

: [steps forward] "☆☆☆☆☆☆, take a look at this."
: [moves to look over his shoulder] "What is it? Show me."

: "Plans for a fire spear." Flamethrowers on sticks, basically. Don't ask me why they have flamethrowers but no bathrooms.
: "Fire spear?"

[BGM: This is Just a Rumour]
: "Right. The Liberation Army may be tiny now, but someday we'll be big enough to meet the Imperials head-on. When that day arrives, the fire spear will come in handy."
: "We spent good money for this at the Dwarf Mines."
: "☆☆☆☆☆☆, this blueprint must reach our secret factory, but we can't leave this hideout unattended. I'd like you to take on this assignment." And you trust me ... why?
: [boingboingboing] "Enough! Don't you understand that we're members of the Imperial Army? How can you expect us to betray them? Let's go, Young Master. No need to stay here any longer!" Shut up.
Gremio walks off, dragging Tir. (Tir's still facing Odessa and friends, so yeah, he's dragging him.)

: [steps forward] "Do you have any idea what the Empire is really doing? Do you know what the people want?" No, but I don't think some people living in a sewer do, either.
: "Or will you pretend to ignore all that? Gremio, you saw with your own eyes, heard with your own ears. Are you willing to ignore the truth despite all you see and hear? What about you, ☆☆☆☆☆☆? Do you still want to return to the Empire? And continue to be McDohl's little boy?"
I like this line.
: "My father goes his way, I go mine."
: "Wait just a moment, Young Master. Talk like that and you'll never rejoin the Imperials!" Who said I want to?

: "Northwest of Lenankamp, across the river, lies Mt. Tigerwolf. Over the mountain is a village called Sarady. Someone from the factory will meet you there." Yeah, I know; I went there with Ted for a prosperity crystal.
: "Odessa, I just don't get it. Why do you insist on this guy? He may be an Imperial spy. Yet you want to give him the blueprint for something that could change the destiny of the Liberation Army?" I'm just tenkai like that, Flik.
: "Don't worry. I'm going too."
: [steps forward] "What? If you're going, I'm going too."
: "Flik, if you come along, who's going to protect this place? It's about time you began acting like a leader." I like that she's having her boyfriend stay home. Refreshing gender dynamics in jrpgs!
: "Don't worry, Flik. I'll protect Odessa, if you promise to protect this hideout."
: "It's settled. To Mt. Tigerwolf, then."
Odessa joins party!

[BGM: none again, just sewer noises.]
Talking to people...
: "If any harm comes to Odessa, you'll be sorry." Uh, if any harm comes to her, it's not going to be my fault.
: "Mt. Tigerwolf is northwest from here, across the river. Sarady lies past the mountain."
: "........."

Checking Odessa's stats! They're not very good. Mind you, she's level 6 to the rest of my party's 10-ish, but they're still not very good. She comes with a permanent Wind Rune and a Steel Bow that's whatever level Ted's was when he left your party. She also has a permanently equipped Head Gear, which is good mid-game/late-game armour. I think the only thing better than Head Gear for most of your characters that's easily available is a Silver Hat?

[BGM: Distant Mountain]

: "I don't want to spend the night out in the open." Well, thankfully there's an inn that was suspiciously locked back when I was here with Ted.
: "In any case, we have to go up. Let's go."

Whoo! I can actually kill the blob monsters this time around! And the snails. They both drop rare stat-boosting stuff: water rune pieces (they go on your weapon) in the case of the blobs, and defence rune pieces (they raise defence) in the case of the snails.

Unlike last time I was here, I can actually kill the bunnies with axes this time around. Fucking bunnies.

Found a wind rune piece in a chest! Wind rune pieces make your weapon earth-element and raise your ... defence, I think. Meanwhile, earth rune pieces make your weapon wind-element and raise skill. Thank you, translation team. ... Or at least I think that's a translation mistake; might've been present in the original. I'll check sometime.

Fuck you.
: "But you'd better stop here and continue tomorrow. It's dangerous around here, what with all the bandits and all. Why don't you spend the night here?" Yeah, you sure look trustworthy.
: "Sorry. We're in a hurry." Damn right.
: "Great idea. My feet are killing me."

: "It's special tea from Mt. Tigerwolf." TEA?
: "Let's give it a taste." No.
: [jumps] "Ugh. It's pretty bitter."

: "Hey Ledon! How've you been! Doing well for yourself I see."
: [steps forward] "Why it's Boss Kessler. Welcome, welcome. As you can see, I just pulled a job...
: [looking at Odessa] "And a fine-looking woman in the bunch, too. Wait a minute, this here is... Ledon! What have you done, you fool!"
: "W-what do you mean??"
: "Do you know who this is?"
: [walks over to Kessler] "Just some stupid traveler, I should think."
: "Idiot! Even an ignoramus like you must have heard of Lady Odessa of the Liberation Army."
: "Why of course, Boss. Even kids know who Lady Odessa is... You don't mean that this here is??"
: "Yes I do. Hurry up and prepare an antidote."

[fade out]
: "Uh, let me see, a rabbit's tail, rose leaves, a handful of sugar..."
: "Ledon, if anything happens to Lady Odessa, you can say goodbye to your head!" Friendly fellow, isn't Kessler.
: [moving faster] "Yikes! Rose's tail, sugar leaf, handful of rabbits..."

[fade out]
: "Forgive me, Lady Odessa. Without knowing it, I nearly committed my life's gravest error. If you like, I'll make Ledon here pay with his..."
: "Please sir! Spare my head."
: "Don't be ridiculous. I'll have to be more careful from now on. Maybe I do trust people too much, like Flik says."
: "I have no way of apologizing, but please stay here for the night. I'll do what I can by way of hospitality."

I like that they didn't bother making closed-eye sprites. They did in II, though.

Viktor, Cleo, and Gremio get up.
: "Good morning, Young Master."
: "You're up early, ☆☆☆☆☆☆."

: "Hey Gremio, why is Cleo in such a bad mood?"
: "Don't bother her, Viktor. Cleo is always in a bad mood when she wakes up."

Odessa gets up, too.
: "I see everyone's here. Today we reach Sarady."
: "Leaving already? I'll unlock the door."

I found a Clone Crystal! It's a command rune for people with swords like Viktor's. I have no clue who else can equip it. Humphrey, maybe? I dunno. I always put it on Viktor if I put it on anyone...

Sarady sells water crystals in the item shop, by the way.

: "Where could it be?"
: "It's a small town. We'll find it soon."
It is, in fact, the building we're next to.
: "This must be the inn. Let's rent some rooms and wait for the messenger."
INNKEEP: "What? Customers? Goodness, it's been years. Rooms will cost you 50 bits each."
Haha, was going to buy water crystals first, and the innkeep said "So it's not... I was so..." when I went [Don't stay].

Sleepy Cleo, Viktor, and Gremio make the same sounds they did earlier.

: "Kessler of Mt. Tigerwolf, Flik, Humphrey, Sanchez -- they all expect so much of me. But sometimes I feel like running away. I'm not sure I'm worthy of their hopes. What do you plan to do? Will you return to the Empire?"
Picking the ungrammatical option~
: "I don't understand."
: "Use your head. You have the ability to judge right from wrong." But the voices in my hand want me to kill everyone :'(
: "Your father is a Great General of the Empire. Perhaps you'll be able to return to a peaceful life. But remember that you can't turn away from what you see and what you feel. Because if you do, that's a sin..." ... I giggled. I like Odessa, whenever the script's not treating her poorly. Apparently if you picked 'I'm not interested' and then 'Of course' she then talks about her uncle, only the English translation is terrible so she calls her uncle her father. No wonder she's got family issues.
Odessa looks over the balcony/fence/thing and then back at Tir.
: "You're strange. I feel compassion when I'm with you." Wait, and you don't the rest of the time? Sobbbbb Odessa's lines.
: "I suppose Viktor brought you to us because he felt that special quality in you. There are many in the Liberation Army. Humphrey, Sanchez, Mose... and Flik ... but nobody has eyes like yours. Eyes that draw people to you." That's because I'm tenkai like that.
: "Many people... If I should ever..."

[MUSIC STOPS. Back to owls.]
: "Who is it?!"
Why are ninja always named shit like 'Kage'? Why not 'Koinu'? That'd be my badass ninja name.
: "Mose certainly keeps unusual company. How is he? I received a letter from him mentioning that a pigeon of his was sick. I find it hard to imagine Mose taking care of a sick pigeon."
: "Very strange, lady. Sir Mose does not keep any pigeons."
: "I'm sorry. I was just testing you." Odessa's so polite about being a Silverberg :3
: "I never betray a contract."
: "This is the blueprint for the Fire Spear." [walks over] "Please deliver this. The future of the Liberation Movement depends on it."
: "Understood. I will go now."
Kage leaves.
: "It's getting late. ☆☆☆☆☆☆, we'd better rest."
Odessa goes back to bed.
... but I'm going to say hi first: "You must be tired too. Go back to your bed. I'm sorry I kept you up with such strange stories."
And out of spite, I refuse!! I go to the bed next to Odessa's instead. Take that!

[BGM: none; birds chirping.]
: "What do you mean, our job is done?"
: "We finished our business last night, didn't we, ☆☆☆☆☆☆?" Oho.
: "Come to think of it, Young Master's bed was empty in the middle of the night." And why do you know that, Cleo?
: [HOPS D:] "Y-y-young M-m-mast-ter, what were you up to? Something you can't tell me?" I'd make a snarky comment, but that speaks for itself. Oh Gremio.
: "Come, let's get going, ☆☆☆☆☆☆."
: [HOPS MORE ;~;] "Y-y-young M-m-master!"
: "Let's go, Gremio."
